Pupils from Leighton Primary School in Crewe have made history by burying a time capsule on the site of the new Extra Care development on Rolls Avenue.

The pupils, parents and teachers from the primary school, on Minshull New Road, joined forces with the construction team from Avantage to bury a special ‘time capsule book’ created by the students which gives an insight into life for the residents of Crewe in 2008.

The capsule is due to be opened in 2058, when life for the residents of the Extra Care development, Beechmere, will have changed a great deal. The development itself is making history for other reasons too; as the first of its kind in the UK the apartments consist of 132 stylish self-contained apartments to rent, buy and part-buy, with 24 hour on-call care available for all residents. Non-residents will also be able to use all the facilities on site including the bar, restaurant, hair salon, gym, library, computer suite and village hall.

Glyn Turner, head teacher at Leighton Primary School, said: “Putting together the time capsule book has been a great learning experience for the pupils. They have had to consider the items that most represent life in 2008, and it has caused a great deal of healthy debate. Who knows, there may even be some pupils who will be residents at Beechmere when the capsule is opened in 50 years time.”

Claire Henning, sales manager at Avantage, adds: “We want to involve the local community as much as possible in the new housing development here in Crewe, and it’s been great having the involvement and support of local pupils in the project. And who knows, in 50 years time when the time capsule is opened, some of the children who took part may even be residents themselves.”

Beechmere, is an ‘Extra Care’ housing development, built by Avantage for people over the age of 60. The apartments and facilities on site will allow residents to stay active, make new friends and remain in their own home for as long as possible.
