> Grove Village Receives Prestigious Regeneration Accolade
Grove Village was announced as a finalist at the Regeneration and Renewal Awards 2008 last night in the Regeneration Partnership Award category at a ceremony held at London’s Hurlingham Club.
Grove Village is the £100 million housing PFI scheme, created by Harvest Housing Group, MJ Gleeson Group and Nationwide, that has been radically transforming the former inner city estate of Plymouth Grove in Manchester into a thriving urban village since 2003. Only the best projects made it through the initial stages of judging, which involved a rigorous assessment process by a panel of regeneration experts.
The Regeneration and Renewal Awards were launched in 2007 to recognise and reward inspirational regeneration work. Entrants for the new category of Regeneration Partnership were required to meet a number of strict criteria in order to qualify for the final stages, namely: objective evidence that they had improved or helped to improve the physical or environmental quality of a place or the economic or social well being of a community, originality, long lasting impact or the potential for long lasting impact, value for money and/or financial viability and involvement of and benefit to local people.
The strong entry submitted by Grove Village outlined the tremendous work achieved so far, including the refurbishment of over 660 homes to a high standard, the construction of 650 high-quality new homes for sale, the demolition of over 400 unpopular properties, the creation of a new village centre and the implementation of a crime and safety focus group, involving residents and police.
The regeneration scheme has also incorporated many environmentally sustainable features such as a new pedestrian ‘green route’ to promote walking and cycling, energy efficient features within homes including thermal insulation and more economical heating systems.
The inspirational renaissance of the area is creating new demand for homes, raising property prices, generating local jobs and transforming local amenities.
Chairman of Grove Village, Ian Perry commented:
“We have all worked determinedly since 2003 to establish Grove Village as a desirable, modern, urban village. Becoming finalists in the Awards is confirmation that the commitment to the redevelopment has been a resounding success for all involved. Crucially, the redevelopment of the neighbourhood is giving other developers the confidence to invest in the area and has generated a surge of community pride and spirit among long term residents and new members of the community”.
