What is a hate incident or hate crime?
A hate incident is any incident that the victim or anyone else perceives is motivated by hate. Hate crime is any criminal behaviour that you – or anyone else – believes is motivated by the offender’s prejudice or hatred of their victim because of their:
  • race
  • colour
  • ethnicity
  • nationality or national origin
  • religion
  • gender
  • gender identity
  • sexual orientation
  • disability.
Being a victim of behaviour motivated by hate can be hurtful, confusing and frightening. Your attacker picks on you for who you are, or for who or what they think you are. Hate incidents can take many forms including:
  • physical assault
  • damage to property
  • offensive graffiti
  • arson
  • verbal threats
  • offensive letters
  • abusive or obscene phone calls
  • abusive language or gestures
  • intimidating groups/gangs
  • malicious complaints
  • offensive leaflets and posters
  • dumping rubbish outside your home or through your letterbox.

Most people who carry out hate crime or incidents live in the same neighbourhood as their victims. By reporting it, you may be able to prevent these crimes happening to someone else. If you are a victim or witness, make sure you report it. All reports of hate crime are taken very seriously and treated in the strictest confidence. Reporting makes a difference… to you, your friends and your community.
