The Community of Northside received some welcome news recently as it learned that its local Community Centre has been granted nearly £65,000 to help develop new services and opportunities in the area.

The Northside Community Centre will receive funding from Derwent & Solway Housing Association, a member of Harvest Housing Group, who have pledged £15,000 to the centre and The Coalfields Regeneration Trust who have awarded a grant of nearly £50,000.

Doreen Murray, Community Centre Treasurer said:

“We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Coalfields Regeneration Trust whose award will help us improve the facilities available to the Northside Community. Our thanks also go to Derwent & Solway, not only for their donation, but also for the help, support and guidance they provide”.

Ann Douglas, Chair of NCCL added:

“We are delighted at the success of our application. Employment of a Centre Manager will enable us to strengthen current activities and develop new services, to increase educational, training and social opportunities across all age groups. It will have the added benefit of increasing the sustainability of Northside Community Centre.”

Stella Kent, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer at D&S, who assisted the centre in preparing the bid to the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, commented:

“We were keen to offer our support to a centre that is so important for the local community. The secured financial support will enable the employment of a Centre Manager, and will also cover associated costs such as the provision of IT and office equipment initially until March 2011. We are very pleased for all involved”.

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust is an independent grant-making organisation that was established in 1999 to help promote and achieve social and economic regeneration in the coalfields of England, Scotland and Wales. The Trust supports grass roots community activity such as the Northside Community Centre and recognises the important role this work has in regenerating former mining communities.
