> Moorlands Housing Show Their Ongoing Commitment To Environmental Improvements
Moorlands Housing, a member of Harvest Housing Group have further demonstrated their dedication to protecting the environment by joining forces with LWD Waste Services and Travis Perkins in Leek to efficiently and safely dispose of gypsum, a material that is found in plasterboard and plaster.
The landfilling of gypsum and other wastes with a high sulphate content together with biodegradable waste has been banned in England and Wales since July 2005. However, where construction waste contains up to 10 per cent gypsum, separate disposal has to date not been required.
From 1 April 2009 the ten per cent guideline has been replaced by the introduction of new guidelines from the Environment Agency, meaning that gypsum waste that cannot be recycled and is sent to landfill must be deposited in a separate cell with non-biodegradable waste.
Moorlands Housing have created a gypsum recycling point at Travis Perkins in Leek enabling their workforce to dispose of waste efficiently when calling for supplies. The move will help to significantly reduce the amount of potentially lethal hydrogen sulfite gasses released into the atmosphere from landfilled gypsum.
Commenting on the introduction of the recycling point, Paul Towers, Asset and Procurement Manager at Moorlands Housing commented:
“One of our key business objectives is to minimise environmental impacts when carrying out work for our customers and stakeholders. This partnership ensures that we can be proactive and minimise our environmental footprint.”
Environmental issues are one of Harvest Housing Group’s Key Business Objectives and the initiative is just one of a number of projects that has been and continues to be introduced by the Group.
