Fulwood resident, Mrs Alice Astin, recently celebrated her 100th Birthday and staff at Forest Brook House, the Eaves Brook sheltered housing scheme where she has lived for 17 years organised some wonderful surprises to mark the very important occasion.

During the event on 21st April, Mrs Astin received a card from the Queen congratulating her on her special milestone and also in honour of the event, her grandson made a surprise visit, all the way from Australia.

As Alice is a keen animal lover, she was also delighted to receive a visit from a lamb, owned and brought in by Mr Gordon McAteer, Senior Estate Officer at Eaves Brook, a member of Harvest Housing Group.

On the day of the visit Gordon also brought along a feeding bottle, much to the delight of Mrs Astin, who quickly delivered it to the hungry lamb. Alice’s neighbours at the scheme joined her for the event to offer cards and gifts, one of which was a framed poem, written especially for Alice by Mandy Foster, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer at Eaves Brook.

Commenting on the event, Mandy said:
“After receiving her card from the Queen, Mrs Astin thought her day couldn’t get any better, that was until her grandson walked through the door with flowers and cards from the family members living in Australia. She was so delighted and speechless when he arrived; it was a very touching moment”.

She added:
“As Alice is unable to get out as much as she used to and has always been an animal lover, we also wanted to surprise her with a visit from a fluffy friend. From the delighted look on her face throughout the day, I think we succeeded in providing her with a fitting celebration of such a special event”.
