When:  Tuesday 9 June 2009, 10am.

Where: Site of the former Westfield Pub, Wastwater Avenue,
Workington, Cumbria CA14 3QX

Who: Cllr Barbara Cannon (Cllr for Moss Bay Ward), Robert Porter - Director of Derwent & Solway Housing Association, Mark Fryer from the South Workington Partnership and representatives from both Allerdale Borough Council and Thomas Armstrong.

Demolition work at the site of the former Westfield Pub in Workington will commence on Tuesday 9 June, eventually making way for a development of brand new, high-quality family homes by Derwent & Solway Housing Association.

Derwent & Solway Housing Association, a member of Harvest Housing Group, is funding the project and purchased the Westfield Pub site in January 2009.  The Housing Association has also funded part of the demolition costs.  Managing Director, Robert Porter feels that the demolition of the pub will be beneficial to the whole area.  “We have a commitment to our neighbourhoods that goes beyond simply managing our existing homes, we want to help improve the quality of life for local people and this project will do just that,” he said.

The Westfield Pub has been a constant source of nuisance and anti-social behaviour in the Wastwater Avenue area for a number of years and the pub was even set on fire in August 2008.

Ben Brinicombe, Property Regeneration Manager at D&S who will be overseeing the project said, “We hope to redevelop the site with some high quality new family homes.  However, in the meantime we are focusing our efforts on clearing the site and making it safe and secure.”

Funding for the project has been secured from Allerdale Borough Council and the South Workington Partnership.  Both organisations felt that the demolition of the pub was important to the regeneration and renewal of the South Workington area.

Cllr. Barbara Cannon, Chair of the South Workington Partnership said; "I am delighted that at long last something constructive is being done with this site.  The former pub has been a target for vandals for sometime and its deteriorating condition has been a blight on the neighbourhood.   Partnership working between The South Workington Partnership, Allerdale Borough Council and Derwent and Solway Housing now means that some much needed housing can be built for local people."

Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd won the demolition contract and Derwent & Solway have sent a letter out to local residents to warn them of the dangers to children presented by building sites and the need to report any unauthorised entry on to the site to the local police.
