On Saturday 25 July the official opening of Oakwood Local Park in Birchwood will take place. The play park is the first of its kind in the Warrington area, being fully accessible to able bodied children and children with physical disabilities.

Work began on the park earlier this year and representatives from Warrington Borough Council, Councillors and staff from Birchwood Town Council, pupils from Birchwood C of E School, Foxwood School, local residents and members of the Friends of Oakwood Park joined members of the board and staff from Frontis at a turf-cutting event.  Frontis, a member of Harvest Housing Group, were on the steering group for the park development.

Together the various parties secured over £100,000 for the development of the play park in 2008 and have since been granted over £40,000 from Wren (Waste Recycling Environmental Limited).

The official opening of the park will take place at 12 noon and will be undertaken by the grandson of John Keeney who passed away earlier this year and was instrumental in getting the park built.  Mayor, Pauline Nelson from Birchwood Town Council, the Friends of Oakwood Local Park and a director from Frontis will join Thomas at the event.

The fun day is being organised by the Friends of Oakwood Park with assistance from Frontis and the Birchwood Lions.  There will be a free barbeque and a variety of stalls and games including the ever-popular stocks, raffles, tombolas and rides. The Birchwood Brass Band will be playing and there will be Morris dancers. Prices have been kept to a minimum, thanks to sponsorship by Grassroots Grants and also Stronger Together Warrington.
