Housing Association Promotes Tidier Neighbourhoods
Derwent & Solway Housing Association, a member of Harvest Housing Group, are due to hold two community tidy up events in Hillside, Maryport on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 October.
The events are intended to improve the appearance of a number of notorious fly-tipping and household rubbish ‘hot spots’ in the town and also inform D&S residents of the best ways to handle household rubbish responsibly.
The Housing Association has been working in conjunction with Allerdale Borough Council, Resource Cumbria, the Police and waste and environmental management company, Focsa Services, to organise the events. Local children on half term holidays will also be involved in recycling activities, a litter collection and a visit around the neighbourhood to decide where new litter bins should be positioned.
As part of the initiative, Hillside residents are also being offered a free special collection service of any bulky household refuse by D&S for a limited period, a service that usually incurs a charge from the council. Residents will be able to book their free collection service by attending the Hillside Neighbourhood office on Monday 26 October between 1-2pm where they will receive some useful tips regarding recycling and refuse disposal by Focsa.
Commenting on the two-day tidy up, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer for Derwent & Solway Housing Association, Stella Kent, said:
“These events will raise awareness of the litter issues faced by residents in Hillside and will hopefully encourage more people to handle their own refuse in a conscientious manner. By involving the younger members of the community we hope to promote good citizenship and pride in their neighbourhoods.”
Following the tidy up events, D&S will be monitoring cases of fly-tipping and litter offences very closely and will work with Allerdale Borough Council to pursue legal action for offenders.
