Stress-related illness, depression and anxiety are the cause of more lost working days than any other work-related illness.

To support businesses in the region, Derwent & Solway - a member of Harvest Housing Group - is hosting a one day conference on the 21 July to inform them about the support available on mental health issues and promote well-being among employees.

The Mental Health and Well-being for Cumbrian Businesses conference is taking place at Best Western Castle Green Hotel, Kendal, with the support of The Employee Bridge project which provides ‘in work’ support to businesses to help reduce sickness absence and employee turnover.

The aim of the one-day conference is to inform businesses of the help and advice that is available to them through being involved in The Employers Bridge project and the support structures available in the region.

The day’s programme includes expert speakers, with keynote speaker Dame Carol Black, National Director for Health and Work for the Government. There will also be two workshops; one about advice and information about mental ill health, and one for further information about legislation and policies employers should be aware of. The conference will be chaired by John Sidney, Director of Supply Chain Management for Sellafield UK.

Robert Porter, director of Derwent & Solway Housing Association, said; “Derwent & Solway has set up this conference to help ensure that companies throughout Cumbria have access to help and advice so they can support staff with mental health issues and promote well-being in the workplace.”

Robert added; “We have had a fantastic response to the conference. There are 140 delegates registered and counting. The delegates represent around 100 businesses with an employee base of around 35,000 across Cumbria and the North West. There is also 25 organisations exhibiting at the event so there will be lots of valuable information available during the day.”
