Staff from local housing association Eaves Brook nominated ‘inspirational’ Sonia Ramsay, a local heroine for The Winning Women Awards, held in Manchester on 20th May.

Sonia, an ex-gospel singer turned vocal performance coach, moved to Rossendale Valley in 2001 to set up her own company, Creative Industries UK, which offers everything from DJ and MC skills right through to graphic design, and beauty.

Sonia recognised that future talents were going un-noticed due to lack of resources and difficult social circumstances. Realising that the trust and confidence of the community was imperative to the success of her project, she worked alongside Eaves Brook’s Neighbourhood Management team in a bid to enhance the lives of individuals, creating opportunities and opening up doors for local residents.

The Winning Women awards were designed to recognise the efforts of the unsung heroines of the business, arts, and community across the North West, and the success of her initiative in Rossendale made Sonia Ramsay an ideal candidate.

The annual awards were held at the Midland Hotel on Friday 20th May and were presented by Granada presenter So Rahman and award winning TV broadcaster and author, John Suchet. At the prestigious celebrity lunch, three women picked up their Winning Women trophies, but unfortunately Sonia narrowly missed out on winning an award on the day.

Nevertheless, Sonia has undoubtedly enhanced the local Rossendale community. Her continuous dedication means that she has been recognised as an integral part of the community, and she looks forward to furthering the developments she has already made in the future.
