> Residents Help Keep Cumbria Tidy
Sunday 5th June saw United Nation’s World Environment Day marked right around the globe, and Derwent & Solway Housing Association organised a number of community-led initiatives in their own neighbourhoods in recognition and support of the day.
Derwent & Solway held clean-up days for residents of Hillside in Maryport and nearby Harriston to help keep their neighbourhoods ‘green’ and tidy, and they proved to be a great success with local people, young and old alike, happy to get their hands dirty in a bid to clean up the area.
A third event, organised for Pecklewell, also in Maryport, could unfortunately not take place due to bad weather but there are plans for it to take place at a later date.
Colette Small, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer for Derwent & Solway said:
“World Environment Day is a great way of raising awareness about the environment and how we can best look after it.
Residents were really keen to get involved in our initiatives and it is hoped that it will encourage more people to respect and take pride in the area they live.”
The initiative in Harriston, which saw the Residents’ Group join with local youngsters for the clean-up, was supported by ABC Environmental Services who supplied Derwent & Solway with litter pickers and bin bags, as well as collecting all the rubbish at the end of the day.
In Hillside, the neighbourhood wardens weren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves either, and helped the residents in their efforts.

“The number of young people who took part was phenomenal. They took time out of their school holidays to help us and we owe them all a big thank you; they’ve really helped make a difference and we’re all seeing the benefits.”
Similar initiatives are held throughout the year by Derwent & Solway Housing Association to promote local involvement and to benefit the community as a whole creating a cleaner and better environment for everyone to live in.
