Sunday 5th June saw United Nation’s World Environment Day marked right around the globe and Manchester & District Housing Association organised a number of community-led initiatives in their neighbourhoods in recognition and support of the day.

They also selected the weekend to launch their ‘Street Pride’ initiative in Trafford, in association with Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council.

Over the past few weeks, Manchester & District Housing Association have been holding clean-up days and gardening events in areas such as Hyde, Offerton, Radcliffe and Stretford, to encourage residents to help keep their neighbourhoods and the city as a whole ‘green’ and tidy.

Diane Russell, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer for Manchester & District said:

“World Environment Day is a great way of raising awareness about the environment and how we can best look after it.

These initiatives have all been a fantastic way of bringing the community together, working for a shared aim and the results are beneficial for everyone as the result is a tidier, cleaner city.”

An Earth Action Grant obtained from the Environmental Agency enabled Manchester & District to run an ‘Alleygate Alert’ initiative in Hyde to clean and gate local Alleyways to tackle the problems of litter and rubbish, and prevent the areas becoming breeding grounds for germs. This was part of a previous partnership initiative with Tameside Communtiy Safety Unit, which gated the Martin St/Ward St Alleyway and transformed it into a

haven of peace and tranquillity, furnished with benches and plants, creating a safe and secure environment.

Grosvenor Street Ground Force, took place in Radcliffe to encourage young people in particular to get involved in cleaning and gardening activities in the area and the results have been tremendous.

And another event is planned for Wednesday 8th June in Stretford as Manchester & District’s ‘Street Pride’ initiative, which was launched on Saturday (4th June), gets underway.

Lorna Powell, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer for Manchester & District in Trafford says:

“It is important that people can take pride in their neighbourhoods and we hope that initiatives such as ‘Street Pride’ will help to promote local involvement and encourage people to take ownership of their neighbourhoods.”

Manchester & District are delighted with the results of these initiatives and events and more are planned for the future so that they can build on the progress that they have made towards a greener, brighter city.
