A number of Cockermouth residents are returning to their homes in Victoria Court this week, after the completion of extensive repairs to the flood damage caused by January’s storms.
A total of 20 properties owned by Derwent & Solway Housing Association were affected by the storms, including 3 in Victoria Court’s sheltered accommodation scheme, where residents are among the first to return.
A resident from Trinity Court in Workington was the first Derwent & Solway tenant to return to their property in April.
Since January contractors have been working hard to completely refurbish the properties, which have included re-plastering, new skirting boards and doors, complete re-decoration, electricity and gas safety checks and the fitting of new kitchens.
While the work has been carried out, Derwent & Solway have arranged for alternative accommodation for all their residents as close to their homes as possible.
One resident has been temporarily housed at Firth House, another of Derwent & Solway’s sheltered accommodation schemes in Seaton, at the lady’s request of being near to her family. Others have been staying in local hotels such as Hundith Hill just outside Cockermouth, before transferring to the Trout Hotel in the town centre.
Residents are delighted to be returning to their homes and Derwent & Solway are providing Marks & Spencer hampers to their tenants as a welcome home gift.
Marks & Spencer have made up the hampers especially for the residents, with all the contents paid for by Derwent & Solway.
