Bored youngsters around Cumbria will have something to occupy themselves with during the summer holidays when mobile youth clubs visit the area.
The two mobile youth clubs part-funded by housing associations Derwent & Solway, Home Housing, Impact Housing, Westfield Housing and Eden Housing will visit most neighbourhoods in the borough to provide some light entertainment for young people.
Depending on the venue, the mobile youth vans will bring with them DJ workshops, table-football, mini pool, giant Connect 4, computer games, face painting, giant Jenga, the opportunity to get involved with banner painting and more. Plus, a series of sports games will be available to take part in, subject to the level of space available at particular locations.
The initiative, originally set up by Home Housing Association three years ago, has previously won two awards; a Cumberland News award for Best
Social Inclusion Project in 2003 and the Home Star award for Project
of the Year in 2004.
Last year, eight hundred kids across nineteen neighbourhoods got involved. This time round, more neighbourhoods will be taking part and it’s expected that over one thousand young people will make use of the mobile youth clubs. Any youngsters taking part must have a consent form signed by a parent or guardian.
Colette Small, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer for Derwent & Solway said:
“We’re delighted to be involved with this project for the second year running. We got some great feedback from the youngsters last year who were able to get active whilst having fun, instead of sitting at home bored!”
To kick-start the activities this year, an afternoon session took place today at Ewanrigg Community Centre, for youngsters of Maryport. Other locations the youth club will visit include Alston, Penrith, Kirby Thore, Carlisle, Brampton, Port Carlisle, Moorclose, Hillside, Westfield, Northside, Kirkbride, Anthorn, Aspatria, Silloth, Salterbeck, Dearham, Seaton, Gt Clifton, Highfield, Little Clifton and Frostoms.
