Following the success of the theft-prevention technique Smartwater, which has been available across Hillside, to support falling crime levels, residents living in Westfield can now also capitalise on the system.
Smartwater is a water-based fluid, likened to the DNA principle, which marks valuable property with a unique forensic ‘code’ to make identity of stolen property and the owners much easier.
The markings, which will also be transferred onto anyone handling the goods, are invisible and can only be identified by the use of an ultraviolet light.
Stella Kent, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer at Derwent & Solway says:
“Although burglaries and theft from domestic properties are already very low in Westfield, we are committed to continually improving and developing our neighbourhoods and aim to reduce these numbers even further - it is great news we can now offer Smartwater in Westfield free of charge.”
Usually £25.00 per property, Smartwater is being funded by both D & S and the West Cumbria Crime and Disorder Partnership so no cost will be incurred by any residents wanting to make use of the scheme, which is open for all residents in the area not just D & S tenants.
The Neighbourhood Support Team will be visiting homes in Westfield from Monday 3rd July for anyone wanting to participate. They will all be carrying identification, which will be shown before carrying out any work.
If residents are not in a leaflet about the scheme with contact details will be delivered so no one misses out on this home security scheme.
Ends.
