Your tenancy agreement

Your tenancy agreement is a legal contract.  It is between you and the organisation that owns the home you live in.  It confirms your right to occupy your home, sets out your responsibilities as a tenant and tells you about your obligations.

The type of tenancy agreement you have will be stated on the first page of the agreement you sign when you become a tenant.  The precise legal details of your tenancy agreement are set out in the document itself.  Please keep it in a safe place.

We will have explained the legal aspects of your tenancy when you signed up for your home, but if there is anything you don't understand then please contact your local Neighbourhood Office and someone will be happy to help you.  You can also seek independent advice from a Law Centre or the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Your rights as a tenant

  • You have the right to live in your home, without interference from us, from the date your tenancy starts.
  • The law protects your tenancy.  This means we can only end it if we have permission to evict you, or if you decide to give up your tenancy or end it in some other way.
  • You have the right to have repairs cempleted on time.  If the repairs are not carried out satisfactorily, or we have failed to act, you may be entitled to compensation.  Please contact Harvest Response on LoCall 0845 345 0272 for more information on this.
  • You may, with our written consent and subject to your local council's rules on planning and building control, make alterations or improvements to your home; and erect a shed, garage, outbuildings, fence, greenhouse or other structure, or an areial for broadcasting or receiving TV or radio.  You must contact Harvest Response before you start any work.  When you end your tenancy you may get compensation for certain improvements to your home if we approved them before they were done.
  • You may see, comment on or correct information we hold about you, your partner, or a family member living in your home if you tell us you wish to do so.  In some cases we may charge £10 for this.  If the information relates to any legal action or if releasing it could cause distress or disadvantage to any other person, then for legal reasons we will have to refuse the request.
  • You have the right to become a member of a tenants' group, or to start one in the area you live.

You can find more information about your rights as a tenant in the Housing Corporation's leaflet 'A charter for housing association applicants and residents'.  Ask Harvest Response for a copy.

Under the tenancy agreement there are responsibilities that both, you the tenant, and us the landlord must adhere to.  To see what these responsibilities are please click the links below:
