2007 Montgomery Awards Winner and Runners’ Up Details
Runner up – D&S
Keswick Out of School Club
They provide after school child care for children upto 4-11 years old, from picking the children up from school and taking the to the club where they receive a snack meal and provided with a range of activities up until 6pm when they are collected by their parents. The club allows parents to take full time education and is run by fully qualified child care workers. It relies heavily on grants, of which there is a short supply.
• The winnings will ensure that there is funding for the club to continue to stay open and supply the childcare at the highest level. It will go towards, supplying snacks, activities, trips away, equipment, toys, etc.
Runner up – Frontis
The Vicarage, Birchwood
This group has created an atmosphere of acceptance and encouragement in which support is given to those that need it. The immense energy of the new vicar means that the acceptance, encouragement, support and care is now overflowing in the neighbourhood.
• The winnings will go towards a new porch at the church which is in very bad disrepair.
Runner up – Eaves Brook
Joyce Price
Joyce has worked for many years organizing events such as garden parties, raffles, social outings and keeping on top of all the work that has been done at Hollybank (LSE).
• Joyce will spend her winnings on tidying up certain areas of the complex.
Runner up – Partington
POWER (re wildlife trail)
POWER has organized a wildlife trail at the back of Oak Road houses near the canal. The project will give the community somewhere they can go and sit, or teach their children about nature. This group have also campaigned for cleaner parks, better bus services and better children’s services.
• Their winnings will help supply things for the wildlife trail eg seating and other such planting.
Runner up – M&D
Anne Schofield
Anne is described as a super lady who has tuned around the gardens at Ogden Court, She also organizes coffee mornings, Halloween parties and Christmas dinner. She finds time to help others with their gardens and helps out at Willow Wood Hospice and her church. She really makes a difference.
• Anne will spend her winnings on further activities, social gatherings and the garden at Ogden Court.
Runner up – Moorlands
Keeling Road Neighbourhood Group
The groups represent a complex of 24 older people’s bungalows. 6 months ago the residents were experiencing antisocial behaviour, parking problems, dog fouling and a lack of community space. The changes this group has made in 6 months is exceptional, enlisting the help of PCSOs, the Fire & Rescue Service, the Scouts and local Councilors. They have created a new community space and the quality of life for the residents has been improved.
• The winnings will go towards buying two benches for the residents to sit on and talk in their new surroundings.
Overall Group Winner (Moorlands)
East Biddulph Residents Association
They have a proven track record of running a successful community café and resource centre and wish to open a furniture exchange along the parade to help people who live in this are who need help to furnish their homes.
• The winnings will help fit out premises once the lease is secured and for furniture exchange as the premises are currently empty.
