Tony Cunningham, the Labour MP for Workington, donned a hard hat and took his place at the helm of a digger on Thursday, 5 April to launch the start of a redevelopment scheme in the region!
Derwent & Solway Housing Association are set to build ten brand new bungalows on the site of St. Michael’s Court, a former sheltered housing scheme for the elderly, completely transforming the previous bed – sit accommodation into stylish, modern homes.
Speaking on the day of the launch, Tony Cunningham (MP) said;
“I am fully aware for the need for additional affordable homes in my constituency and welcome this new development of bungalows which is greatly needed in Workington. All of the local Housing Associations work closely with Allerdale Borough Council to deliver new affordable homes in the area where there is high demand, and to a standard that meets customer’s current aspirations. Affordable homes are only possible through Government Support via the Housing Corporation who has provided a grant to make this development possible.”
Robert Porter, Director of Derwent & Solway Housing Association added;
“The development will be situated around a courtyard, and each bungalow will have two double bedrooms. The bungalows are being developed for both rental and shared ownership purposes; six of the properties are for sale as shared ownership, the remaining four are available for rent. All the properties will be a highly insulated timber frame construction with very efficient boiler and under floor heating system. The properties will be very efficient and economic to run.
Priority for the bungalows will be given to people from Workington, or those returning to the town from surrounding villages who are over 55 or have a disability or medical requirement for a bungalow, and are unable to purchase at full market value.
We have worked closely with Allerdale Borough Council to develop the site and I would like to thank them for their support in making the development possible.”
The properties are due for completion in March 2008.
