Northside Community Centre Ltd (NCCL) Committee, together with Derwent & Solway Housing Association are leading an appeal to find the oldest residents in Northside, who will be asked to officially open the new Northside Community Centre at the end of January.
The Northside Community Centre will provide residents with a range of social and educational facilities including health promotion and guidance, the Credit Union, benefit advice and family support. A range of activities such as the youth club, keep fit, quiz nights, mother & toddler groups, church activities and bingo will also be on offer.
Colette Small, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer at Derwent & Solway said:
“The centre will play such an important role in the life of our community that it would be lovely if the oldest resident living here, could open it for us.
That someone who is so much part of Northside should launch these wonderful facilities and the better access to local services that the Centre will provide is a great way to get started.”
Although parts of the Northside Community Centre have been up and running since September, it’s only after the official launch that it will be fully operational.
And there are plans for much more.
A resident survey is currently taking place to find out what local people would like to see happening at the Centre and the results will be displayed at the opening, which takes place on Sunday 28th January 2pm – 6pm, after which there will be a disco for the young and young-at-heart alike.
On the day there will be lots of activities including a tour of the centre and its facilities including the community shop and gym, where staff will be giving demonstrations of the equipment and booking inductions for anyone wishing to join.
There will be face painting, games, story telling and a crèche for younger visitors as well as bingo, stalls and a tombola and raffle.
There will also be a consultation corner where residents can put forward any suggestions about what should be done with the old community centre site.
All that is left now is to find the all-important oldest resident to cut the ribbon and make the Northside Community Centre official.
Colette Small adds:
“They don’t have to be a Derwent & Solway tenant, just a member of the Northside community – that’s what this project is all about.”
