> A night at the Oscars for Junior Neighbourhood Wardens
Manchester & District Housing Association are delighted to announce that they have been nominated for the ‘Mayor’s Oscars’ for their innovative Junior Neighbourhood Warden Scheme, an initiative which is the first of its kind in the North West of England.
The Junior Neighbourhood Warden Scheme is an M&D initiative in partnership with Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council and the Community Wardens. It has been designed to develop a sense of community pride amongst young people by providing constructive activities that benefit the local area. Previous activities have included a ‘Pick and Skip’ event and a visit to Crewe’s Blue Watch fire fighters to discuss bonfire night safety. The Neighbourhood Wardens are currently preparing for a ‘Bulb planting day’ to add welcome blooms to their area.
The ‘Mayor’s Oscars’ are awarded each year by the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich to individuals or groups who serve the community in various ways. The Neighbourhood Warden Scheme has been nominated in the ‘Environmental Initiative’ category which recognises an individual or group who has organised an initiative that benefits the local environment.
Amanda Jones, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer for Manchester & District said about the nomination:
“I am delighted that the positive work the Junior Wardens have been involved in is being recognised through this nomination. The scheme aims to encourage responsibility at an early age and hopefully other youngsters will realise that they play an important role in the improvement and maintenance of their neighbourhood. My fingers will be crossed for the children on Oscar’s night.”
The Mayor’s Oscars will take place at Nantwich Civic Hall on 22 February 2008 and will be hosted by the Worshipful the Mayor Councillor Maurice Jones.
