Derwent & Solway Housing Association, a member of Harvest Housing Group, has obtained planning permission for fourteen new bungalows in the Needham Drive and Moorclose Croft areas of Workington.
The homes are part of Derwent & Solway’s new development programme to increase housing provision for residents and to meet the housing need across Allerdale.
Five new homes will be developed on Needham Drive and nine on Moorclose Croft to replace unsuitable apartment blocks that were removed last summer with funding support from the Furness and West Cumbria Housing Market Renewal programme and West Lakes Renaissance.
The bungalows on both sites will be the most energy efficient properties that Derwent & Solway have in their portfolio, featuring modern energy efficient methods of construction, and utilising renewable energy sources in their heating systems.
Ben Brinicombe, Property Regeneration Manager at Derwent & Solway said:
“The developments are due to commence this summer and are expected to be completed by late 2009. We are also hopeful that we can add a further two bungalows to the list shortly in the Birch Close area.”
The Workington Housing Market Action Plan delivered by Allerdale Council identifies the need for sixty-two new bungalows available for rent in Workington between 2007 – 2012, and D&S are keen to deliver on the needs for the area.
Robert Porter, Director of Derwent & Solway said:
“It is important to be pushing these schemes forward at a time when there is such a desperate need for this type of accommodation in the Workington area.
We are grateful for the help and support of the Housing Market Renewal Programme in paving the way for these projects to come forward and to Allerdale Council for the support of their Housing Services team.”
